Motorsports are second only to football in Uganda. In a bid to get more racers behind the wheel, one enthusiast has constructed an off-road race car, with the aim of introducing low-cost rallying in the East African country. CCTV's Leon Ssenyange went along for the ride.

the dust raised by the SMC Challenge Rally is barely starting to settle. The rally was won by Jas Mangat who closed in on championship leader Ronald Ssebuguzi. Mangat now trails Ssebuguzi by just 15 points. The rally, which was punctuated with a couple of night stages, will however be remember for a spectacular crash by the crew of Dr. Ahmed Ashraf and Peter Stone. Interpol and officials of the Uganda Revenue Authority have handed over 24 vehicles to the National united agency of the United kingdom and the British high commissioner in Uganda Alison Blackburne. URA officials told NTV that the vehicles were intercepted and impounded last year in July from different car bonds in Kampala. They said there is a huge racket involving Ugandans who connive with people in the UK to smuggle these cars in, in containers. The handover was at URA headquarters at Nakawa, Kampala. Engineers at Uganda’s Kiira Motors Corporation recently unveiled a prototype of its sedan hybrid electric vehicle dubbed the Kiira EV Smack. The car manufacturer is slated to start commercial production of the Kiira brand vehicles and passenger buses by 2018. VOA’s Paul Ndiho reports.

The Kayoola Bus, manufactured by Kiira Motors in Uganda, is unique and in a class of its own because it is the first ever solar-powered means of public transportation in Uganda. An electric motor fuelled by Lithium-ion batteries powers the 35-seater bus and has a range of up to 80 kilometers on a single charge.

The Cooper Motor Corporation Uganda Limited (CMC) launched Eicher Trucks & Buses in Uganda today at a launch event held at its Nakawa premises. Eicher trucks and buses from VE Commercial Vehicles are designed to improve transport efficiency, thereby reducing logistics costs leading to better profitability for the operator.

Uganda’s automobile innovation of a solar bus named Kayoola, is attracting investment interest from the Republic of South Africa. Kiira Motors’ Prototype electric bus uses 10 solar power panels mounted on its top with two rechargeable batteries which increases on the Bus’ 80KM Range. South Africa’s Minister for Public Transport Dipuo Peters’ now says that they are keenly verifying Uganda’s Solar powered Bus, with a view of seeking a partnership for future production.
